Guy Mowbray, Alan Shearer – Southampton v Arsenal, FA Cup Quarter Final, BBC One (2026)

Bank holiday weekend and I’m back at work. Voluntary, so I’ll keep the moaning to a polite minimum. It’ll feel less voluntary when the money lands next week.

Outside, Storm Dave is doing its thing. Still possibly the most reassuringly nonthreatening name for something trying to rip roofs off. Wind swirling properly now as the light drops. I’m in here for the long haul, clocking out when the last driver rolls back in around 6 am.

Since stepping away from running the tea and coffee club, the biscuit safety net has gone. No quiet reach, no absent-minded chewing through the worst part of the shift. Just herbal tea. Steady, slightly monk-like. It does the job.

I was oddly pleased to see live football on terrestrial tv. This one had the feel of a cup upset about it. Arsenal still carrying a bit of damage from that League Cup final defeat to Manchester City, who’d already swatted Liverpool aside earlier in the day without much fuss.

Football isn’t always about Cambridge United. Just most of the time. It was nice to let something else take the focus for a bit.

My favourite pairing on commentary. Guy Mowbray and Alan Shearer just get it right. Easy, sharp, no fuss. Feels like football, not a presentation.

Southampton, pushing hard for promotion from the Championship, started like they meant it. You wouldn’t have guessed there was a division between them. Arsenal, injuries and all, still had enough talent on the pitch.

Most notably, 16 year old wonder kid, Max Dowman. What a talent. Here’s hoping he fulfills his potential.

For some reason Southampton were not wearing names on the back of shirts. Which in 2026, looks extremely odd. And to think, back in the day it was the norm.

It turned into exactly what television wants. A proper cup tie. A bit of chaos, a bit of jeopardy, well called all the way through.

Southampton leading at half time. Arsenal equalize. Surely they will go on and win. Nope, Southampton nicked the winner on 85 minutes.

Southampton fully deserved their victory. Onto the semis.

Meanwhile, Arsenal’s quadruple is now reduced to a double after two narrow defeats. City forgivable. Southampton, not so much.

But, will these defeats nag seeds of doubt into the squad?

I caught most of it between interruptions. Trailers breaking down, drivers calling in. The usual rhythm. In and out of the room, picking it up again like nothing’s been missed.

There’s something quietly comforting about football being on in the background. Whether I’m at home or here, half-watching, half-working. It just sits there, steady, like it always has.
