After The Noise
Everything Is Equal

Mark Johnson, Doug Shulman – Cambridge United v Swindon Town, BBC Radio Cambridgeshire (2026)
At the start of the season, I’d have bitten your right hand off for Cambridge United to be chasing automatic promotion from League Two.
I’m over the disappointment of that dreadful performance and defeat against Barnet last weekend. Bloody football is an ass.
I’m also over the disappointment of Sky moving the match to Thursday night, meaning I couldn’t watch because of work. In that wonderful thing known as hindsight, I could have asked a colleague to come in early and cover.
Instead, it was Doug and Johnno on my mobile, battling through work noise, plus the roving reporters at the ground.
Two teams right in the mix. Cambridge holding a slender two-point advantage over Swindon Town.
Typical late-season game. We battered them. And battered them some more. But with only one goal to show for it, you just knew what was coming.
I got home, turned it on straight away. 89 minutes on the clock. Still 1–0. Hadn’t even had chance to greet Bowie, who was demanding his usual post-work attention, when bang.
Swindon score. 1–1.
A few choice words followed.
Bowie, unfazed, lay on his back demanding a belly rub.
Eight minutes of injury time. Still battering them. Balls into the box, corners, one shot destined for the net somehow blocked and out. One of those games. All control, no killer touch.
Full time. A draw.
Ian Holloway knew his side had got out of jail. It leaves that nagging thought… will those two dropped points matter in a month?
But you are where you are after 46 games.
Brilliant commentary from Johnno and Doug. They’ll never realise what a lifeline they are to supporters like me.
Results elsewhere went our way, thankfully. Still third.
Cheltenham Town away on Easter Monday, not overly confident as our record their is poor. Then a massive one at home to Notts County next Saturday. Same points, slightly worse goal difference.
Got a ticket.
Rare trip back to my home city.
Looking forward to that.
