It feels like yesterday we were piling into HMV to grab a copy of Suede’s Animal Nitrate. I still remember playing that CD single on repeat with a group of mates back in ’93. A lifetime ago. And yet, Suede are still here. Still standing.

Three decades on, the cream of Britpop — Suede, Blur, Pulp and, yes, even Oasis (Gallagher dramas aside) — continue to thrive. They’re making music that excites not just the long-term fans like me but also a new generation who weren’t even born when Brett Anderson first snarled onto Top of the Pops.

Of course, you could argue this says more about today’s scene. There’s a serious shortage of talent — The K’s from Warrington are an exception — but the mainstream feels saturated with solo pop stars all churning out variations of the same thing. Maybe that’s just me being an old fart. Old age doesn’t come easy.

So, I turn back to the bands I’ve loved for years. Suede, in particular, have gone from strength to strength since reforming in 2010. They called 2022’s Autofiction their punk album — and it was bloody marvellous. Now they present Antidepressants, which they’ve proudly billed as their post-punk record.

And it sounds every bit the part. From the savvy blast of opener Disintegrate (with that clever connect-disconnect intro) to the raw rush of Dancing with the Europeans, this is an album without excess fat. A couple of ballads provide breathing space, but the rest is punchy, urgent, and completely alive. Listening to it made me feel 23 again — no small feat.

That’s Suede’s magic. Every record sounds different, yet still quintessentially Suede. They’ve kept their edge, their ambition, and their relevance. In 2025 they sound as vital as they did in 1993. They may not be around in another thirty years, but right now, they remain the future.
